Donation etiquette

You have done a remarkable job developing LibrePCB and I want to show practical support. I note that you are keen to receive financial support but you leave it ambiguous as to what amount is ‘appropriate’. I like Cyberduck’s approach and suggest that LibrePCB does something similar. The Cyberduck website suggests what is desirable but leaves the donor with the option to increase or decrease the amount. Being retired, with limited funds and limited use for a PCB design package, I’d like to work out how to make a contribution that is meaningful (not insulting). Any ideas?

Hi,
I’d say there is no insulting donation amount. The financial situation and number of PCBs made with LibrePCB heavily differs from user to user (e.g. a student designing just one PCB vs. a company designing lots of PCBs every year). Also we provide both options, recurring donations and one-time donations. Just pick the donation scheme and amount which feels right for your situation.

From the project perspective, we can’t make a suggestion based on some goal yet. For the sustainable development of a project like LibrePCB, something around 100k per year would be needed (1+ full-time job) but this goal is so far away that we can’t just divide this amount by the number of donators
